Nanyuki:Laikipia Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporters in Laikipia County have pledged to continue supporting the broad-based government. They are urging President William Ruto to implement the ten-point agenda he agreed upon with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
According to Kenya News Agency, this commitment was made during a candle-lighting ceremony in Nanyuki town to commemorate the first anniversary of Odinga’s passing. John Orengo, the party’s Laikipia chairman, emphasized the importance of respecting Odinga’s wishes, which included supporting President Ruto’s administration beyond 2027.
Orengo called for unity within the ODM, encouraging members who had defected to other political parties to return. He highlighted that maintaining unity is crucial for preserving Odinga’s legacy and continuing his vision for Kenya.
The supporters praised Odinga as a staunch defender of the Constitution and an advocate for the interests of ordinary citizens. The anniversary served as a moment to reflect on his dedication to democracy, justice, and national unity.
Rose Muiru, the ODM elections chairperson in Laikipia, emphasized Odinga’s lifelong commitment to democracy and the welfare of the common person. She noted that although the period following his death has been challenging for the party, members remain steadfast in upholding his vision.
Despite being in the Mount Kenya region, Laikipia County has a notable ODM presence, with two County Assembly members elected on the party’s ticket in the 2022 General Election. Additionally, former legislator Mathew Lekidime Lempurkel represented Laikipia North Constituency from 2013 to 2017 on a PDM ticket.
