Nairobi: Senior ODM party officials have lashed out at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for allegedly meddling in their party’s affairs. Led by the ODM party National Chairperson Gladys Wanga and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, the leaders criticized Mr. Gachagua, stating he lacks the necessary political experience to offer advice to any political formation.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mr. Mohamed accused the former Deputy President of orchestrating brutality against ODM supporters during his tenure as the second in command. He recalled instances when Gachagua would strategize against ODM protesters and questioned his credibility to advise the party. Ms. Wanga urged Gachagua to focus on his own political party and refrain from interfering in ODM matters.
The leaders made these remarks during a fundraising event for the construction of the Kendu Muslim Community Cultural and Resource Centre. They emphasized that ODM members are prepared to face candidates from other political formations in the upcoming general elections. The party is advocating for zoning, aiming to include it in pre-election talks with UDA, allowing each party to field candidates in perceived strongholds.
Mr. Mohamed clarified that zoning does not restrict candidates from contesting, as this right is protected by law. However, it would prevent coalition members from presenting multiple candidates in one electoral area. He highlighted parallels with political practices in the UK and the US, where certain regions are dominated by specific political groups.
Assuring members of free and fair nominations, Mr. Mohamed expressed readiness to compete in party primaries. Ms. Wanga echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of fair nominations for strengthening the party. She announced initiatives to bolster the party, including a massive recruitment drive targeting youths and conventions aimed at engaging young voters.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma encouraged regional aspirants to join ODM, highlighting better election prospects under the party’s banner. He mentioned the party’s open portal for aspirants, urging interested individuals to enlist.
