Nakuru:The County Government of Nakuru is intensifying preparations to host the 12th Disaster Risk Reduction Symposium from October 10 to 13, focusing on disaster preparedness and mitigation in the Rift Valley Region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the symposium aims to raise awareness about early warnings and disaster preparedness. County Executive Ambrose Ngare, recently reassigned to a new docket, confirmed that the preparations are in high gear. The county is collaborating with the Directorate of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance to ensure active participation from all relevant departments.
Ngare emphasized the importance of public involvement in strengthening disaster risk awareness and equipping communities with knowledge on prevention and response. The symposium, themed ‘Resilience Starts at Home,’ will enhance Kenyans’ capacity to respond to disasters early. It will gather government departments, agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders to showcase preparedness initiatives and strengthen collaboration.
The event will conclude with celebrations at Nyayo Gardens in Nakuru on October 13, coinciding with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The event underscores Nakuru’s shift from reactive to proactive disaster management, with a focus on prevention and community resilience.
Ngare highlighted the region’s history of natural disasters and the need for early warning systems. He noted that the symposium would provide a platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences and develop practical approaches for disaster management. The preparations are supported by national and international partners, including the National Drought Management Authority and the United Nations Development Programme.
Chief Officer Joyce Ncece stated that the symposium offers a critical platform to evaluate emergency plans and address operational gaps. It will streamline technical coordination and information sharing between county and national authorities. The event will also strengthen the link between national disaster risk policies and community-level actions.
