Major Development Projects Transform Taita Taveta County

Nairobi:Taita Taveta County is witnessing a significant transformation with the implementation of more than 60 priority projects and programs valued at over Sh49 billion. These initiatives, either completed, underway, or planned, span various sectors including roads, housing, markets, agriculture, health, and ICT, aiming to enhance infrastructure and create new economic opportunities for local communities.

According to Kenya News Agency, President Dr. William Ruto emphasized that these projects are part of his commitment to fulfilling promises to Kenyans, particularly the residents of Taita Taveta. He assured that the government is dedicated to ensuring equitable development across the country, with special attention to marginalized communities.

A major focus is on road infrastructure, with the 54-kilometre Mto Mwagodi-Dawida-Mbale-Wundanyi-Bura road being upgraded at a cost of Sh2.1 billion. Additional road projects include the nearly complete Sh2 billion Cess (Nghonji)-Rekeke-Lake Jipe Phase One road and the Sh646.5 million Taita Taveta roads. These upgrades are complemented by last-mile electricity connections, which have expanded the county’s electricity base significantly.

Housing projects are also underway, with the Taveta Affordable Housing Project and the Voi Affordable Housing Project contributing 1,277 new housing units at a combined cost of Sh3.5 billion. Meanwhile, educational infrastructure is being enhanced with new student accommodations at Taita Taveta University and Kenya Medical Training College campuses.

Agricultural investments aim to boost value addition and productivity. This includes a Sh130 million banana processing plant and a completed Sh115 million rice milling plant. Additionally, a Sh500 million industrial park is planned to support agro-processing and logistics.

Governor Andrew Mwadime expressed gratitude for the projects, noting that collaboration between the national and county governments is addressing historical development gaps. He pledged continued cooperation to ensure these developments improve the livelihoods of county residents.

Healthcare facilities are also being upgraded, with equipment and improvements at several hospitals. ICT advancements include new digital hubs and a Jitume Lab, while sports infrastructure is growing with the Vindo Stadium project in Voi.

Social protection programs are providing significant financial support to residents, with the Inua Jamii program and the Hustler Fund distributing substantial funds for social services and microcredit. Additionally, the NYOTA program is enhancing skills development and job opportunities.

Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho highlighted the regional impact of these projects, noting their role in restoring dignity and transforming the development landscape across the Coast region. For Taita Taveta, these projects are pivotal in enhancing connectivity, economic activity, and public services, leveraging the county’s agricultural and natural resources.
