Machakos: The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), through a multi-agency team, raided two premises in Kabaa town in Machakos county and recovered counterfeit alcohol worth Sh13 million. NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa, while addressing the press after the ambush Saturday, said that the raided premises were in a residential area and lacked the required license to operate, thus exposing the public to health hazards.
According to Kenya News Agency, Omerikwa revealed that over a thousand bottles of counterfeit spirits and fake Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stamps were found during the raid. Samples of the alcohol were collected to be analyzed by a government chemist to determine the level of adulteration. Omerikwa expressed concerns about the harmful effects of illicit alcohol on communities, highlighting issues such as addiction, financial strain on families, and increased crime rates.
Omerikwa questioned how such an illicit business could operate openly without being reported by residents, pointing to a disconnect between communities and authorities. He urged the public to report suspicious activities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in combating the sale and consumption of illicit substances.
The CEO assured citizens that a multi-agency team is available around the clock to address complex issues, encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity. Similar raids in Joska and Makueni county over the past two days demonstrate the government’s commitment to eradicating the trade of illicit alcohol and drugs nationwide.
This crackdown aligns with President Dr. William Ruto’s recent declaration to intensify the fight against alcohol and substance abuse as a national priority.
