Murang’a Schools Enhance Digital Learning with Smart Boards

Accra:Murang’a Junior schools in Murang’a County have been equipped with 257 integrated smart boards as part of a government-led digital learning programme. This initiative aims to enhance classroom instruction and broaden access to technology-based education.

According to Kenya News Agency, the programme was launched at Mumbi Primary and Junior School in Kahuro Sub-County, recognized as a leader in the digital transformation effort. Lynn Nyongesa, the Director of ICT in the Ministry of Energy, emphasized that the programme would improve information access, promote inter-school collaboration, and enhance learning outcomes.

Nyongesa highlighted that three teachers at Mumbi Primary, along with others from junior schools, received training to lead the initiative. This effort, sponsored by the World Bank in collaboration with the Ministry of ICT and the ICT Authority, is part of a wider agenda to ensure no learner is left behind in the digital age.

Kahuro Sub-County Curriculum Support Officer Patrick Ndisha reported that approximately 153 teachers underwent digital learning training in June. He noted that while the distribution of smart boards and laptops would aid teachers in applying their new skills, the lack of adequate digital equipment persists, necessitating additional resources.

Monica Ngure, headteacher at Mumbi Primary and Junior School, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, citing improved lesson delivery and interactive educational opportunities for learners. Despite the benefits, Ngure mentioned the need for more equipment due to the school’s growing enrollment, which currently restricts the smart board’s use primarily to Grade Nine.

The smart board distribution represents a significant step in advancing digital education in Murang’a, but school administrators stress the importance of continued investment in equipment and teacher training to fully realize the programme’s potential.
