Githambo: Githambo Primary School in Kiharu Constituency has received a major boost in digital learning following the establishment of a computer laboratory equipped with computers and tablets. The facility, supported by former students of the school, has been fitted with 15 computers and 10 tablets to enhance learners’ access to technology and strengthen their digital skills.
According to Kenya News Agency, Murang’a County Government Chief Officer for Health and Githambo alumnus Eliud Maina Wanja stated that the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and provide learners with the opportunity to acquire necessary skills in an increasingly technology-driven society. Maina encouraged other alumni to contribute to their former schools and communities by supporting initiatives that improve education and the welfare of young people. He emphasized the importance of developing digital literacy from an early age, considering technology’s integral role in everyday life.
Maina highlighted that exposure to ICT would complement classroom learning by enabling pupils to access digital educational content, conduct research, and develop computer skills that could benefit them in their future studies and careers. AIPCA Bishop for Murang’a South and Githambo alumnus Samuel Gathang’a also addressed the event, urging young people to use digital platforms responsibly, especially as the country approaches the 2027 General Election. Gathang’a emphasized the need for social media to promote education, development, and constructive dialogue, rather than spreading divisive content.
Githambo Primary School Headteacher Kenneth Kamau expressed gratitude for the alumni support, noting that the equipment would make learning more interactive and complement the Competency-Based Education (CBE) approach. Kamau assured that the school would ensure the equipment’s proper maintenance and integration into learning to enable pupils to gain practical ICT skills.
The initiative comes at a time when digital literacy is increasingly becoming an essential component of education, with access to devices, electricity, and reliable internet connectivity remaining key challenges, particularly in some rural schools. The alumni called for increased investment in digital infrastructure, including electricity connectivity and affordable internet services, to enable more schools to benefit from technology-based learning. They emphasized that partnerships between government, schools, alumni, the private sector, and development organizations could help bridge the digital gap, ensuring that learners in rural areas are not left behind as education becomes increasingly technology-driven.
