Murang’a Leaders Urge Stronger Child Protection During Long Holiday

Murang’a:Political and national government administration officers in Murang’a have called on communities to address social evils and ensure the protection of children during the extended school holiday period.

According to Kenya News Agency, the appeal comes as the school break enters its second week, with over eight weeks remaining until the new school year begins in January 2027. Speaking at a National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) event in Mugoiri Ward, Kiharu constituency, leaders emphasized that safeguarding children is crucial for the development and growth of society.

Betty Maina, the county woman representative, highlighted the adverse impact of social evils, such as the unregulated sale of alcohol, on children’s well-being. She called on parents and guardians to increase their vigilance and supervision, especially during the long holiday. Maina also warned against sexual violence targeting minors and addressed the stigma surrounding teen pregnancies, urging parents to seek help and support their children.

Chief Mathew Miako of Mugoiri location echoed these sentiments, advocating for ongoing efforts against alcohol, drug, and substance abuse to ensure a safe environment for children. He advised parents to stay informed about their children’s activities during the school holiday.

Children’s officer Evelyn Miringu warned that the absence of structured school protection during the long break poses challenges, with increased risks of neglect, abuse, and risky behaviors among children. She urged the community, including parents, village elders, and religious leaders, to remain vigilant and ensure children engage in constructive activities.
