Murang’a: Murang’a County plans to roll out a support programme from early next year that targets to improve education standards in all local public day-secondary schools. In the programme dubbed Inua Masomo, the county administration will support and reward top-performing students from all local secondary schools.
According to Kenya News Agency, a public notice issued by Governor Irungu Kang’ata states that the initiative will reward the top 10 students in each form, promoting academic excellence and aiding students from vulnerable households. Kang’ata indicated the majority of learners admitted in day secondary schools are from poor backgrounds but acknowledged that if they are supported, they can perform well and join universities.
On October 3, principals from the targeted secondary schools met and endorsed the programme, recommending that assistance be given each term to foster healthy academic competition. For those who will receive awards early next year, the top students will be selected based on th
e results of their third-term exams. The schools’ principals have been requested to submit names of the students to offices of the county government.
Each school will submit a list of 30 students, with the top 10 students from each form included. The Kang’ata administration will make special arrangements for new-day secondary schools with less than 30 students, as all enrolled students in such schools will receive support, effectively providing them with free secondary school education.
The County Government encouraged all students to work hard and strive for success, as the programme will be a stepping stone for many. Additionally, the County government has announced gifts for select ECDE and PP1 learners, awarded based on merit. ECDE teachers have been requested to inform parents of their children’s selection and submit a final list of deserving learners by November 4.
Parents of selected learners can collect the gifts on November 8, 2024, from their respective ECDE centres. The distribution of the gifts
will be managed by boda boda riders who deliver uji to ECDE centres after collecting the gift packages from 54 uji kitchens across the county. Murang’a County Government trusts that the initiatives will empower students and boost the local economy by investing in young learners. Governor Kang’ata emphasized that the programme aligns with their commitment to education and creating equal opportunities for all students.
