Muhoroni: The residents of Kasese village in Muhoroni Sub County, Kisumu County, are protesting against a local dumpsite that poses significant health risks. The site has become a concern for the villagers due to unfulfilled promises by the County government, including the failure to upgrade access roads and establish a garbage recycling company.
According to Kenya News Agency, the villagers accuse the contractor responsible for the dumpsite of hiring outsiders for jobs that local youth could perform. The residents argue that they should be involved in the cleanup efforts because they face health risks from the dumpsite’s contamination.
The villagers also blame the County government for neglecting its commitments, such as improving local infrastructure and building a hospital to address health issues related to the dumpsite. “The County government promised development benefits, including better roads, but these promises have not been fulfilled,” said Joel Owuor, a local resident.
Local residents have issued an ultimatum to the County government, demanding immediate action to address the dumpsite problems. They warn that if their concerns are not addressed, they will protest to demand the relocation of the dumpsite. George Ooko, another resident, expressed frustration, stating, “Our homes are being overshadowed by the dumpsite, and if it continues to be a burden, it must be moved.”
The community remains resolute in their demand for the government to honor its pledges and resolve the issues surrounding the dumpsite.
