Migori:Maternal mortality has significantly decreased in Migori County due to a partnership with a local Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). The collaboration has resulted in a reduction of the maternal mortality rate from 673 to 412 per 100,000 live births.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kennedy Ogendo of the Lwala Community Alliance highlighted that the community-led model through Community Health Promoters (CHPs) has been instrumental in achieving this 39 percent reduction, thereby saving many lives. The NGO has trained 8,000 Community Health Workers in five counties, with plans to train 11,000 by 2028.
The Lwala Community Alliance operates in 15 counties to support maternal mortality reduction and enhance primary healthcare systems through the digitization of CHPs. A recent partnership with Rongo University aims to further this mission. Prof Ngalo Ayayo from Rongo University emphasized that this collaboration will help reduce infant and maternal mortality, and build capacity within the university.
The partnership includes plans for research, policy-making, and possibly establishing a Medical School at Rongo University. Lwala Chief Programme Officer Sandra Mudhure noted that the partnership will inspire research publications and enhance primary health care solutions.
Dr. Moreen Adoyo from Rongo University praised the MOU for its potential to bridge the gap between research and practical learning. She highlighted the importance of addressing mental health challenges among students and noted that the partnership will offer students opportunities for internships and industrial attachments, preparing them for the job market.
