Gichugu:At 65, Patrick Mwai has demonstrated that age is no barrier to learning by earning a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certificate in Building Technology Level 5 from Gichugu Technical and Vocational College (TVC).
According to Kenya News Agency, Mwai has honed his construction skills over the years through practical experience, yet had never received formal recognition until now. The certificate marks a significant step towards professional acknowledgment and opens new opportunities in the construction sector.
In addition to the RPL certificate, Mwai also received his National Construction Authority (NCA) card, with assistance from the college during the application process. The institution plans to support him in registering his own construction company, offering a formal business structure to enhance his industry standing.
Currently leading a team of about 15 workers, Mwai’s new qualifications will enable him to formalize his operations and expand his business opportunities. The Recognition of Prior Learning programme plays a crucial role in helping experienced workers acquire qualifications based on skills gained outside traditional education systems.
Gichugu Technical and Vocational College Principal Joseph Kimemia highlighted the programme’s impact, stating it allows artisans to have their practical competencies assessed and recognized, bridging the gap between workplace experience and formal certification.
For Mwai, the new qualification and NCA card offer a chance to leverage his extensive experience, inspiring other skilled workers to seek formal recognition and pursue their ambitions. Despite reaching what is often considered retirement age, Mwai continues to build on his career foundation.
