Meru Central Dairy Union Seeks to Boost Milk Exports to Comoros

Meru:Meru Central Dairy Union is intensifying its efforts to expand its international market by engaging with a high-level delegation from Comoros. The delegation’s visit aimed to explore opportunities for increasing the supply of Kenyan milk products to Comoros.

According to Kenya News Agency, the delegation was led by Comoros Consul General Abdou Mouigni. During their visit, they explored the source and processing of milk exported to Comoros and discussed ways to strengthen the business relationship between Kenya and Comoros.

Mouigni expressed his satisfaction with the visit, highlighting the potential for collaboration in agriculture, livestock, dairy, and other business sectors. He noted that the visit marked the beginning of a stronger relationship that would benefit both countries through increased trade and shared experiences.

The delegation was impressed by the scale of the farmer-owned enterprise and expressed optimism about the partnership’s growth. Mouigni emphasized the recognition of the Union’s products in the Comoros market and efforts to secure a dominant position for Mount Kenya milk products.

Meru Central Dairy Union CEO Kenneth Gitonga stated that the Union had been supplying milk to Comoros for about six months. He expressed optimism that the visit would lead to increased orders, despite current temporary milk supply challenges due to changing climatic conditions. Gitonga anticipated that the onset of rains would ease these shortages.

Plans are underway to establish a direct shipping arrangement between Kenya and Comoros, which would enhance the efficiency of milk product transportation and increase exports. The Union’s Board Chairman, Simon Kiruja, emphasized the visit’s significance in strengthening international trade relations and assured support for maintaining quality and reliable supply.

The expanding export market is expected to provide additional outlets for milk produced by Union-affiliated farmers and strengthen Kenya’s position in the regional and international dairy markets. The Union’s management is committed to working with farmers to improve milk production and quality for both domestic and export demands.
