Homa Bay: Mawego Girls School emerged as the winner of the taarab songs category during this year’s Homa Bay County, Kenya, Music Festival. The annual event, held at La Salle Primary School in Homa Bay town, showcased the musical talents of various schools in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Wire Mixed Secondary clinched victory in the class 432 music category, while Agoro Sare Secondary celebrated wins in classes 422 and 464 music categories. Asumbi Girls School also enjoyed success, emerging victorious in the class 412 category, with St. Marys Marindi School finishing as runners-up.
The festival, themed ‘Enhancing Creative Economy through Artistic Expression for Sustainable Development,’ highlighted the role of music and the arts in driving economic growth and empowering creatives. Subira Neema, Vice Chairperson of the Kenya Music Festivals, emphasized the potential of artistic expression to contribute to sustainable development.
Participants performed a variety of pieces, including traditional Kenyan music and dance, contemporary compositions, and Swahili poetry. Schools that excelled in the county festival will advance to the regional levels, scheduled to take place at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology from July 7th to 13th.
