Mathare United Secures First Win of the Season with 1-0 Victory Over KCB

Nairobi: Mathare United FC edged KCB FC 1-0, claiming their first win in the 2025/26 SportsPesa League on Friday in a rain-soaked clash at the Kasarani Annex, Nairobi.

According to Kenya News Agency, the match played under rainy conditions saw Mathare United stun their opponent with captain Elli Asieche scoring a free kick in the 43rd minute, securing Mathare United’s first win of the season. KCB nearly equalized when Kevin Ouru made a one-handed save, pushing the ball onto the woodwork.

Despite KCB’s efforts for an equalizer in the second half and dominating possession, they struggled to break through Mathare’s defense, which held firm to secure all three points away from home. KCB was aiming for a second consecutive win after defeating Tusker FC in their league opener, while Mathare United was desperate for a win following their defeat by Posta Rangers.

Mathare United FC Head Coach, John Kamau, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, praising his team’s resolute defense throughout the match despite KCB’s offensive pressure. He noted that the win has motivated the team for future games.

KCB Head Coach, Robert Matano, acknowledged the tough match conditions and emphasized the need to quickly refocus on their upcoming game against Kariobangi Sharks.

Mathare United will face Tusker FC on October 2, aiming for their second win, while KCB will play Kariobangi Sharks on September 30. The victory elevated Mathare United to fifth in the standings, while KCB remains second after two rounds in the Sportspesa League.
