Man Drowns During Swim in Maragua River

Maragua: A young man has tragically lost his life by drowning in Maragua river, while on a swimming expedition. The 27-year-old resident of Nairobi had travelled to Gacharu village Maragua in Murang’a County with his friends to attend a burial ceremony of a young man who had been murdered in the capital city.

According to Kenya News Agency, eyewitnesses reported that as the burial ceremony was going on at around 3 pm, the young men embarked on a tour of the area, unaware of the tragedy that would soon occur. Levi’s Nyongesa, a friend of the deceased, recounted the events, saying, “We decided to tour this area as river Maragua passes through it, and while at it we decided to enjoy a swim. Unfortunately, one of us drowned and we are still waiting for his rescue. We are devastated and do not understand how this happened.”

The burial ceremony was momentarily disrupted as the news of the incident spread. Mourners quickly gathered by the Maragua river, with a palpable sense of grief enveloping the village. Festus
Macharia, another friend, expressed his sorrow, stating, “We travelled from Nairobi to bid goodbye to one of us, but now we are going back without our friend, not knowing whether he is dead or alive.” He urged the county government of Murang’a to expedite the search and rescue efforts.

By the time of going to press, efforts to retrieve the body were still ongoing, led by the county rescue services.
