Malaba Township: Malaba Township Junior secondary school in Teso North Sub-County has secured the title of Busia County champions in the boys’ basketball category. In parallel, Lugulu AC Junior Secondary from Butula Sub County emerged victorious in the girls’ category during the term one primary and junior secondary school finals held at Busia stadium.
According to Kenya News Agency, alongside the champions, Busende Junior secondary and Nambale Urban Junior secondary teams, who finished as runners-up in the boys’ and girls’ categories respectively, will represent Busia County in the upcoming regional basketball finals. The track events for primary schools saw Bunyala Sub-County take the lead with 166 points, followed by Teso North with 151 points and Teso Central with 123 points.
In the junior secondary category, Teso Central emerged as winners with 176 points, with Teso South and Teso North following with 141 and 133 points respectively. Concerns over age cheating led to the suspension of the Rugby 15’s finals for both boys’ and girls’ categories.
Moses Wanyama, the sponsor and chief guest, emphasized the need for the Busia county government to invest in sports infrastructure to nurture young talents. He also called for an increase in the co-curriculum fund by the ministry of education to aid schools in preparing students for competitions.
Hellen Milomo, Teso Sub County Education quality assurance officer, assured support for the selected team, encouraging them to showcase their talents during the regional finals scheduled for April 1st at Eregi Teachers Training College.
