Makueni County Awards University Scholarships to Top Students

Makueni: The County Government of Makueni, through its Department of Education, ICT, and Internship, has announced scholarships for 88 students to pursue university education in various courses.

According to Kenya News Agency, the announcement was made by Japheth Mang’oka, the County Executive Committee Member for Education, ICT, and Internship. Speaking at the Makueni Integrated Vocational Empowerment Centre in Wote town, Mang’oka revealed that out of the over 30,600 students who took the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), only 1,400 qualified for university admission, including 14 students who achieved an A grade.

The top 14 performers will pursue degrees in disciplines such as Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor of Science in Space Engineering, Nursing, and Computer Engineering. Mang’oka emphasized the county’s commitment to fully funding these students’ education until they complete their studies.

He further advised students to focus on their academics and encouraged those who did not qualify for university to consider enrolling in local vocational centers to gain skills that can help them support themselves and their families. Mang’oka highlighted the importance of vocational training for those unable to attend university.

A noteworthy aspect of the scholarship program is that it supports students who were awarded scholarships in 2022 and are set to take their KCSE exams in 2025. One scholarship recipient, Ian Mutinda, expressed gratitude towards the county government for their support throughout his secondary education and into university. Mutinda, who plans to study Medicine and Surgery at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, pledged to give back to the Makueni community in the future.

In addition to funding their education, the county government also provided each beneficiary with a suitcase. The announcement event was attended by several county officials, including Acting Chief Officer for Education Damaris Makau, Chief Officer for Energy Naomi Nthambi, and Public Service Board CEO Dr. Redempta Kavindu, alongside other officials.
