Nairobi: The Makueni County Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AnyWay Solid Environmental Solutions Limited to enhance the county’s road infrastructure with a focus on climate resilience through data-driven planning.
According to Kenya News Agency, the MoU outlines a collaborative framework for using data and technology to improve the planning, maintenance, and upgrading of Makueni’s roads. The partnership aims to establish a county-wide data collection and road asset management system to help officials prioritize road investments based on factors such as safety, accessibility, climate resilience, and cost efficiency.
The system will utilize satellite imagery, mapping data, and rainfall records, alongside information on agricultural land use, population served, flood and drainage risks, terrain, and the proximity of roads to markets, schools, and health facilities. This approach is designed to support evidence-based decision-making, particularly in areas prone to climate-related disruptions.
The agreement also includes technology transfer in innovative climate-resilient infrastructure solutions, along with training and capacity building for county staff. Additionally, AnyWay Solutions will assist Makueni in resource mobilization by identifying potential funding sources and preparing necessary documentation.
The collaboration comes at a crucial time as Makueni seeks to bolster infrastructure that supports agricultural production and access to essential services. AnyWay Solutions, which integrates engineering with geospatial technologies such as AI and digital road asset management, aims to identify vulnerable road sections and prioritize investments using satellite imagery and local knowledge.
The MoU was signed by Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and AnyWay Solid Environmental Solutions Limited’s East Africa Regional Manager Solomon Nigusie at the Israel Embassy Offices in Nairobi. Israeli Ambassador to Kenya, Gideon Behar, who witnessed the signing, emphasized the broader cooperation between Israel and Makueni in sectors such as health and agriculture.
Ambassador Behar highlighted that the MoU would enable strategic investment in road efficiency and preparedness for climate change impacts, underlining the significance of climate-smart solutions and the transfer of Israeli agricultural technology to Kenya.
Governor Mutula expressed gratitude for the ongoing cooperation with Israel and highlighted the county’s interest in expanding collaboration beyond health to agriculture and other value chains. He mentioned opportunities in mango, pepper, and honey production that could benefit from technological expertise and investment.
The partnership aims to ensure year-round access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities, especially during the rainy seasons. While the agreement does not commit to specific financing or construction, it establishes a framework for potential resource mobilization and activities agreed upon under the program.
This initiative aligns with the growing emphasis on climate-resilient infrastructure amid the challenges posed by extreme weather events on transport networks and rural economies. Kenya and Israel have identified climate action, agriculture, renewable energy, health, and technology as areas for deeper bilateral cooperation.
