Bunyala: Principal Secretary for Economic Planning Dr Boniface Makokha has called for proper planning in schools through the construction of multi-storey tuition blocks to maximize space and ensure value for money. Makokha emphasized that fragmented classroom construction was costly and often failed to provide value for money, urging schools and government agencies to adopt multi-storey complexes where land is limited.
According to Kenya News Agency, the PS spoke on Friday while inspecting ongoing construction of multi-storey tuition blocks in four schools in Bunyala Sub-County, being implemented through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF). Makokha highlighted the necessity of emulating the construction of complex storey tuition block projects to ensure value for money and efficient use of space, which would also facilitate other activities within schools.
Makokha noted that the multi-storey concept could foster student unity and enhance learning facilities. The projects have reportedly contributed to increased enrolment and improved academic performance in some schools. He mentioned his department’s commitment to conducting field visits to assess the impact of government projects on local communities and ensure proper allocation and utilization of funds.
Budalang’i MP Rafael Wanjala explained that land scarcity had driven the decision to construct multi-storey learning complexes in four schools, including Peter Habenga Okondo Secondary School, Mundere Girls, Sisenye Mixed Secondary School, and ACK Musoma Secondary School. Wanjala stated that each storey block comprises 18 classrooms, three laboratories, a library, and other offices, with projects nearing completion.
Wanjala remarked that the improvement of learning infrastructure in Bunyala had led to better academic outcomes, noting a significant increase in the number of students progressing to universities. He also mentioned that students were advocating for the provision of school buses to further enhance educational access and support learning activities.
