Machakos: Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has launched the fourth edition of the Machakos Governor’s Cup, bringing together more than 13,000 young athletes drawn from 650 teams across the county. The tournament will kick off immediately at the ward level and will progress to sub-county knockouts before culminating in a grand finale in mid-December.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Ndeti emphasized that the annual competition has become a vital part of her administration’s youth empowerment agenda, extending beyond football to impact the lives of young individuals significantly. “The Governor’s Cup is not merely about 90 minutes of football on a weekend; it is about total youth transformation,” Ndeti said.
She highlighted that the county government is utilizing the tournament’s extensive reach across all 40 wards to implement crucial off-field programs, including mental health awareness, voluntary HIV counselling and testing, and career mentorship. “We are nurturing the complete athlete: body, mind, and soul,” she added.
Governor Ndeti noted that previous editions of the tournament have opened pathways for local talent to secure opportunities in national and international professional clubs. Her administration is aiming to position Machakos as a sports talent incubator and a regional sports tourism hub, leveraging its youth population and infrastructure.
She acknowledged the logistical challenges of organizing such a large-scale tournament, noting the difficulty in selecting and developing this talent. The governor also called on the 650 participating teams to maintain discipline, sportsmanship, and fair play throughout the competition. “Play hard, play with passion, and above all, play fair,” she urged.
