LSK Launches Free Legal Aid Clinics During Legal Awareness Week

Machakos:The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has launched its Annual Legal Awareness Week, offering free legal aid to residents in Lower Eastern counties. The initiative, themed ‘Community Advocates Bridging the Gap Between People and Justice’, aims to provide legal assistance to underserved populations in Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kajiado, and Garissa.

According to Kenya News Agency, the five-day campaign runs from October 26 to October 30, 2026, and has shifted from traditional courtroom-based outreach to public spaces such as markets and prisons. This approach is intended to expand access to justice for those who might otherwise be unable to seek it.

The initiative was officially launched by Presiding Judge Esther Maina, who highlighted its importance in connecting citizens directly with legal advocates. Justice Maina emphasized the availability of nationwide free legal aid services, encouraging the public to visit the help desks set up for this purpose.

LSK South Eastern Branch General Secretary, Dorine Mwau, mentioned that this year’s strategy is community-focused, moving beyond courts to places where people congregate. The drive is being coordinated with the Judiciary and local LSK Chapter leaders, reflecting a concerted regional effort to improve access to justice.

Residents dealing with civil disputes, land claims, family matters, and other legal issues are encouraged to visit the LSK service tents located in key public areas throughout the week. Qualified advocates are available at these mobile booths to review case files and offer expert advice without charge, removing financial and geographical barriers to formal justice.

The campaign, which concludes on Friday, October 30, aims to enhance legal literacy, empower citizens, and foster a more equitable justice system by bringing legal services directly to community hubs.
