LSK and University of Embu Launch Free Legal Aid Clinics to Address Justice Gap

Embu:The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the University Of Embu School Of Law have initiated a series of free legal aid clinics aimed at providing residents with expert legal counsel and increasing access to justice.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative seeks to enhance legal literacy among residents and empower them to understand their constitutional rights. The primary focus is on addressing land disputes and succession matters, which are major challenges within the community.

Dr. Wilson Ngigi, Chairman of Commercial Law at the University, stated that the aim is to bridge the justice gap by offering professional legal guidance to residents, particularly those unable to afford legal representation. The clinics will address various legal matters, including land disputes, succession, and property ownership.

During a public engagement in Majimbo area, Embu Town, Dr. Ngigi highlighted that the program not only empowers residents with legal knowledge but also provides law students with practical exposure to real-life legal challenges. The initiative offers students the chance to apply classroom knowledge in practical settings.

Embu-based advocate Muchangi Gichugu emphasized the importance of these forums in equipping residents with legal knowledge. He noted that access to legal advice is a crucial first step toward resolving disputes, preventing unnecessary litigation, and promoting a society governed by the rule of law.

The legal aid clinics are expected to strengthen legal literacy, promote alternative dispute resolution, and uphold the constitutional right of access to justice for all individuals, irrespective of their financial status. Christine Nzula, President Legal Aid at the University, remarked that the initiative reflects their commitment to community engagement and making a meaningful societal impact.
