Eldoret: After years of delays, the construction of the 15,000-seater Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is finally progressing, with works now at 33 percent completion. Speaking during a tour to inspect ongoing construction alongside officials from Sports Kenya, the Ministry of Defence, and the Kenya National Highways Authority, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim expressed satisfaction with the steady progress and quality of work. He noted that under President William Ruto’s leadership, completing the facility is now within reach.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Bii highlighted the stadium’s importance, stating it will strengthen Uasin Gishu’s reputation as the true County of Champions. The Governor confirmed that once Kipchoge Keino Stadium is completed, the contractor will move on to construct 64 Stadium, another key sports facility in the county. He emphasized that the two stadiums, upon completion, will help provide spaces for young people to showcase their talents in various sports.
Governor Bii further emphasized the North Rift counties of Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet are known for athletics, and these stadiums will provide platforms for training and nurturing young athletic talent. He commended the partnership between the contractor, the Ministry of Defence, the county, and national government, affirming that the project will be completed on time. The county has also pledged land for expansion and supporting infrastructure for the athletics and sports facility.
Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo assured that all efforts are underway to ensure the stadium is ready by the end of 2026, just in time to host matches during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. Kilimo affirmed the stadium’s progress, stating that the overall progress is at 33 percent and that the stadium will meet World FIFA standards and be IAAF-approved, ensuring suitability for both football and athletics competitions at the highest level.
