Kericho:Persons with visual impairments in Kericho celebrated their achievements and called for greater recognition of their abilities during World Sight Day celebrations. The event highlighted eye health, inclusion, and the importance of supporting people living with disabilities.
According to Kenya News Agency, the celebration was organized by the Advocacy Forum for People with Disabilities, Kericho chapter, under the theme “Love Your Eyes.” It also marked White Cane Day, which recognizes the role of white canes in promoting independence and mobility among visually impaired individuals.
Langat Kibyegon Julius, Chairperson of the forum’s chapter, encouraged Kenyans to care for their eyesight while showing love and respect to those living with visual impairments. He noted the occasion was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of people who have lost their sight, emphasizing that many excel in various fields despite challenges.
The event brought together representatives from national and county governments, including Assistant County Commissioner for Kapsoit Division, Janet Jawa, who represented the County Commissioner. Jawa acknowledged the capabilities of persons with disabilities, highlighting government support initiatives like cash transfer programs and employment opportunities across different sectors.
Forum members showcased their participation in the Paralympics and international travel, demonstrating that visual impairment does not hinder individuals from achieving their ambitions, supporting their families, and contributing to society. Kibyegon cited visually impaired leaders such as Senator Crystal Asige as role models inspiring others with disabilities.
He urged communities to identify children with visual impairments and help enroll them in schools to ensure they access education and develop their potential. Kibyegon also called for expanded employment opportunities and representation for persons with disabilities in public service, thanking the governments for their support and emphasizing recognition of abilities over limitations.
World Sight Day is observed annually to raise awareness about eye health and the prevention of avoidable sight loss.
