Nandi Hills:The implementation of the proposed Keben Dam project in Nandi Hills is underway, aiming to alleviate water shortages in Nandi County. A public participation exercise has been conducted at Ol’lessos National Polytechnic, marking the beginning of the project’s execution.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Keben Dam water supply project is situated along the Mogobich River in Nandi East Sub County. Initially commissioned in 2016, the project stalled in 2019 but was revived in mid-2026 with an expanded scope. Managed by the Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA), the initiative aims to enhance regional health, economic growth, and sanitation by addressing chronic water shortages in Nandi County.
Projected to serve 200,000 households, the dam will provide gravity-fed drinking water to Kapsabet, Nandi Hills towns, and other areas. During a public participation forum, LVNWWDA CEO Joel Wamalwa expressed the agency’s commitment to completing the project, emphasizing that operational costs for residents will be reduced once the dam is functional.
Wamalwa thanked stakeholders for their support and confirmed that the contractor is prepared to commence construction. He praised the government for the initiative, describing it as a lasting solution to the county’s water shortages. LVNWWDA Director Abraham Cheruiyot added that 70 percent of locals would be employed at the construction site to ensure community benefits.
Nandi Hills constituency Member of Parliament Benard Kitur commended the government, highlighting the importance of investing in water supply infrastructure to unlock economic opportunities and improve lives. The public participation exercise will continue at various locations, including Koilot, Keben dispensary, lower Kilibwon, Songoriet secondary school, and Nandi Hills Bus Park.
