Kanunga Division Operationalised to Resolve Kiambaa and Kiambu Administrative Split

Kanunga:Residents of Kanunga and Ngegu sub-locations will benefit from improved coordination of government services after the operationalisation of Kanunga Division, designed to resolve years of divided administration between Kiambaa and Kiambu sub-counties. The announcement was made at a public baraza in Kanunga, where Senior Deputy County Commissioner for Kiambu County, Titus Macharia, officially transferred the two sub-locations from Kiambaa to Kiambu Sub-County.

According to Kenya News Agency, the administrative mismatch, which dates back over 14 years, included a 2012 court petition challenging the transfer of Kanunga and Ngegu from Kiambaa to Kiambu during constituency delimitation. Although Kanunga Division was gazetted as part of Kiambu Sub-County on June 27, 2017, it was not operationalised until this year, following approval by Internal Security and National Administration PS Dr. Raymond Omollo in January.

Macharia noted that the new arrangement addresses difficulties caused by government officers serving the same communities but reporting to different administrative offices. He explained that the situation had created confusion, with National Government Administrative Officers reporting to Kiambaa and the security committee reporting to Kiambu, complicating the administration of government programmes like the Uwezo Fund, Youth Fund, and Inua Jamii.

The operationalisation of Kanunga Division includes the appointment of Teddy Wanjau as Assistant County Commissioner, and it creates new vacancies for the sub-locations of Kanunga and Ngegu. Macharia announced plans to seek approval for recruitment to fill these positions. Kiambu Town MP Machua Waithaka, who had raised the issue with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and pursued it through the National Assembly’s security committee, clarified that the change does not create a new electoral ward, as Kanunga remains part of Ndumberi Ward until a boundary review is approved by the IEBC.

George Kimani, a village elder from Njunu, expressed gratitude for the operationalisation, noting that residents had previously faced challenges with receiving administrative services. The public baraza also included officers from various government departments, who explained how residents could access their services through Kiambu Sub-County.
