Homa Bay Farmer Honored as UN Person of the Year 2026

Nairobi:Homa Bay County farmer Boniface Otieno Owino has been named the United Nations in Kenya Person of the Year 2026 for his efforts in empowering women and young people through agriculture, mentorship, and sustainable farming practices.

According to Kenya News Agency, Owino, aged 29, received the recognition during the celebrations marking the 81st Anniversary of the United Nations at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), Gigiri. The Annual Award honors individuals whose work advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and embodies the ideals of the United Nations.

Owino’s initiatives have provided training for farmers and created opportunities for women and marginalized groups to enhance their livelihoods. Dan Bazira, Deputy Country Representative to Kenya at UN Women, highlighted Owino’s leadership in transforming lives through community-led initiatives during the ceremony. Bazira noted a field visit to Owino’s farm revealed over 100 individuals being trained in agricultural practices.

The farm serves as a practical learning center for community members to acquire skills in agriculture as a source of income and employment. Bazira emphasized the role of UN Women and development partners in supporting county governments to strengthen gender-responsive governance and planning.

In his acceptance speech, Owino expressed gratitude to the community members, partners, and institutions working collectively to improve livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of investing in knowledge and skills to generate lasting benefits for individuals and communities.

The ceremony also recognized Kevin Wekesa, founder of Play Green, as the runner-up for his work in promoting environmental sustainability through sports. Wekesa’s initiative, established in 2023, encourages environmentally responsible practices in rugby and other community activities.

Dr. Gary Conille, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya, praised Wekesa’s work, which has led to initiatives such as the use of aluminum bottles by the national team and planting over 2,000 trees. The initiative also received a Climate Action Award from the International Olympic Committee in Milan.

Dr. Conille underscored the need for collective action in achieving the SDGs, comparing development efforts to teamwork in rugby. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Dr. A. Korir Sing’Oei, representing the Government of Kenya, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to multilateralism and sustainable development, emphasizing the need for UN reform to address global challenges.

The celebrations, which brought together UN officials, government representatives, diplomats, and development partners, reflected on the organization’s achievements and commitments to peace, equality, and international cooperation. United Nations Day is observed annually on October 24 to commemorate the UN Charter’s entry into force in 1945.
