Jordan GBC Unveils Circular Economy Project to Enhance Green Exports

Amman:Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman emphasized the necessity for Jordanian factories to obtain documented environmental data for their products to remain competitive in export markets, particularly in Europe.

According to Jordan News Agency, Suleiman highlighted the importance of building national capabilities to measure and verify the environmental impact of local products during the launch of the “Promoting the Circular Economy Market and Life Cycle Assessment” project.

The project is spearheaded by the Jordan Green Building Council (Jordan GBC), with support from GIZ under the “Green Activities in Industrial Facilities” (GAIN) program, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Jordan GBC Chairman Abdullah Bdeir noted the initiative addresses a shortage of local experts trained in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).

GIZ GAIN Project Director Simon Floeth highlighted the collaboration between Jordan and Germany in steering the industrial sector towards a green economy transition. Jordan GBC Executive Director and Project Manager Ghaida Salameh, along with GIZ Private Sector Advisor Mohammad Al-Shoshan, outlined the project components, which will run through April 2027, focusing on the building materials, construction, chemicals, and engineering sectors.

The project aims to build capacity through training and pilot studies, assist industrial facilities in issuing certified EPDs, and prepare a practical guide for quick-impact green measures in industrial cities, in cooperation with the Jordan Industrial Estates Corporation and the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply.

Jordan GBC announced the completion of the LCA training program for trainees and named five industrial companies selected for the implementation phase Manaseer Group, Arab Concrete, Orbit Aluminum Industries, Arab Fertilizers and Chemicals Industries (KEMAPCO), and Arab Italian Insulation Materials. Ten trainees will conduct five LCA studies across these companies, with two facilities qualifying to publish certified EPDs internationally.

The event concluded with a technical session by Ipek Goktas Kalkan, founder of Finnish firm EPDlogy, discussing the return on investment in product sustainability data, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and alignment with the circular economy.
