Nairobi:John Kiriamiti, a noted Kenyan author, makes his return to crime fiction with the release of “The Abduction Squad,” a novel that delves into the complexities of law enforcement operating outside its boundaries.
According to Kenya News Agency, the book was unveiled by East African Educational Publishers (EAEP) during the Nairobi International Book Fair at Sarit Expo Centre. Published under EAEP’s Spear Books imprint, this marks Kiriamiti’s sixth book and his return to fiction more than a decade after his last publication. The story is set in the fictional Republic of Magendo and follows the narrative of Tom Baraza, a newly appointed Police Commissioner who opts for an unconventional approach to law enforcement after the untimely death of his predecessor.
Rather than traditional methods, Baraza assembles a secretive unit of convicted criminals, each selected for their unique skills, to undertake a perilous mission on behalf of the law enforcement institution. This setup raises questions about the blurring lines between legal authority and criminality, as Kiriamiti explores the choices made when established rules are deemed ineffective.
The novel probes themes of accountability, loyalty, and power within the fictional Republic of Magendo, offering a narrative detached from specific real-world political systems. Kiriamiti’s earlier works, such as “My Life with a Criminal” and “The Sinister Trophy,” have similarly addressed crime, but his latest novel shifts the focus to the ethical dilemmas faced by institutions responding to crime with unconventional tactics.
Kiriamiti’s enduring relationship with EAEP spans over four decades, beginning with his debut, “My Life in Crime.” EAEP Managing Director and CEO Kiarie Kamau emphasized the significance of this ongoing collaboration and the novel’s engagement with critical questions of crime, power, and institutional authority.
