Nairobi: Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Dr. Ida Odinga, has unveiled a National Steering Committee to coordinate commemorative activities marking the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. The committee, chaired by Prof. Adams Oloo, a senior lecturer at Nairobi University, includes representatives from government, political institutions, civil society, academia, the private sector, and the Odinga family.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Odinga said the committee was established by the family to ensure that all activities honouring the late former Prime Minister are coordinated with cohesion, dignity, and a common purpose. She emphasized that the commemorations would not be confined to political circles but would provide an opportunity for all Kenyans to come together and celebrate his life.
Dr. Odinga highlighted several initiatives by national institutions, including Daystar University’s symposium and the University of Nairobi’s Raila Odinga Centre for Democracy. She also mentioned the Kenya School of Government’s Raila Odinga Regional Leadership Academy, showcasing the national significance of her late husband’s contributions.
Prof. Adams Oloo stated that the committee had begun receiving proposals from Kenyans and institutions for commemorative events. He stressed that the celebrations should reflect the national character and include diverse voices, ensuring they transcend religious and social boundaries.
The first anniversary commemorations are scheduled for October 10 to 17. Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, died on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80, while receiving medical treatment in India.
