Mandera:The Mandera County Referral and Teaching Hospital is strengthening its preparations ahead of the anticipated El Ni±o rains by stocking essential medicines and medical supplies to manage a potential rise in patient numbers during the rainy season.
According to Kenya News Agency, the hospital has received medical supplies worth 26 million shillings from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), which fulfills 68 percent of its planned 38-million-shilling order. This order was placed to ensure the hospital maintains adequate stocks throughout the rainy season and beyond.
Dr. Khadija Noor, a pharmacist at the hospital, noted that the initial consignment includes crucial medical supplies such as saline, Hartmann’s solution, dextrose, and other intravenous fluids. Additionally, the hospital has received medications for chronic conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, along with maternal and child health supplies.
The hospital has also acquired zinc and oral rehydration solution kits, metronidazole, paracetamol suspensions, and domperidone for managing vomiting in children. Dr. Khadija anticipates further deliveries, including cold-chain products and controlled medicines that require special handling.
Due to the region’s poor road infrastructure, the hospital deliberately placed a large order valued at 38 million shillings to secure adequate supplies for the rainy season and beyond. Dr. Khadija reported that the facility is nearly prepared, with 68 percent of the supplies already received.
Okash Abdullahi, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, affirmed that the hospital is ready to meet the increased demand for medical services during the rains. He emphasized that measures are in place to ensure patients continue to receive necessary healthcare services without disruption. The hospital plans to keep receiving additional supplies and regularly monitor stock levels to prevent any interruptions in essential healthcare services.
