Homa Bay:Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital has reached out to the public for assistance in identifying 14 unclaimed bodies currently held in its mortuary. These bodies, brought to the facility by police officers in July 2025, have remained unclaimed.
According to Kenya News Agency, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vincent Oduor, has urged residents who have missing relatives or friends to visit the mortuary to verify the identities of the deceased. A court order dated October 8 has been obtained, and the public has until October 24 to claim the bodies. Failing this, the hospital will proceed with the disposal process as authorized by law.
The 14 bodies include 13 males and one female, with some in a decomposed state, making timely identification crucial. Five bodies are associated with Homa Bay Town Sub-County, five with Ndhiwa Sub-County, two with Rachuonyo North in Kendu Bay Town, one with Mbita, and another with Rachuonyo South.
Dr. Oduor mentioned that after the deadline, the hospital will collaborate with relevant authorities to manage the unclaimed bodies. Possible outcomes include burial in designated cemeteries or, if legally permitted, release to medical training institutions for educational purposes.
The hospital continues to appeal to the public to assist in identifying any missing relatives or friends before the October 24 deadline. Those who suspect a missing person may be among the deceased are encouraged to contact the hospital’s mortuary for verification.
