Digital Literacy Devices Distributed to Migori Schools

Migori:The Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), under the State Department for Information and Communications Technology (ICT), has delivered digital literacy devices valued at millions of shillings to Migori Junior Secondary School. This handover event, known as the National Classroom Experience of the Digital Literacy Programme Phase II, marks the beginning of modern learning equipment distribution across 341 public schools in Migori County.

According to Kenya News Agency, the main aim of these activities is to evaluate the Digital Literacy Programme’s progress on a national level, emphasize the responsibilities of institutions in maintaining the equipment, and officially transfer the digital literacy devices to the school’s administration.

During the handover ceremony, Cyrell Odede Wagunda, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Public Investments and Assets Management, confirmed that laptops and interactive smartboards are being distributed to 341 primary and junior secondary schools in the region. Wagunda highlighted that installation is already underway in junior secondary schools, including Migori, Ombo, Muslim, and Kadika primary schools.

Wagunda urged educators to actively integrate the new equipment into daily instruction and criticized those hesitant to adopt digital literacy in teaching. He emphasized the need for teachers to fully utilize the equipment and move beyond resistance to technology in education.

Wagunda also stressed the importance of school management taking ownership of the gadgets and ensuring each school has a qualified ICT-trained teacher to guide the use of digital tools. This initiative was praised by County Director of Education Jacob Onyiego, who called on school managers to make full use of the resources to benefit learners.

Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) Chairperson Okello David assured that school administrators are prepared to safeguard the equipment but noted challenges with storage infrastructure. He urged the Ministry of Education and Board Chairs to establish secure storage solutions. Okello also mentioned that security officers are in place to protect against theft.
