Nairobi: Governor Kenneth Lusaka has mounted a spirited defence of President William Ruto’s development record, urging professionals in the county to take the lead in communicating the government’s achievements as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election. Speaking during the Bungoma Professionals Forum at Kibabii University on Saturday, Lusaka emphasized the crucial role professionals have in objectively assessing the government’s performance based on projects implemented over the past four years rather than political rhetoric.
According to Kenya News Agency, Lusaka shared his first-hand knowledge of the progress made in implementing development programmes in Bungoma and the wider Western region, gained through his interactions with the national government over the last four years. He highlighted the revival of Nzoia Sugar Company as a significant achievement, noting the installation of a new milling machine that has improved the factory’s efficiency.
The governor also discussed the positive impact of the fertiliser subsidy programme, which has eliminated middlemen and allowed farmers to access inputs directly. He praised the improved returns for coffee and tea farmers through direct payments. Lusaka outlined major national government projects underway in Bungoma, including the expansion of Matulo Airstrip, construction of modern markets, and key road works, which are expected to lay the foundation for long-term economic growth.
Lusaka acknowledged that while some projects are still under construction, implementation is on course, with contractors on site and procurement concluded. He commended the national government’s improved disbursement of funds to counties, allowing them to end the financial year with all allocations fully released.
The governor recognized the challenges faced by the Kenya Kwanza administration, including rising public debt and global economic shocks, but argued that investment in infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and social services has been sustained. He urged professionals to use their expertise to explain government programmes to the public and counter misinformation, asserting that the projects are transforming lives.
At the same forum, Industry Principal Secretary Dr. Juma Mukhwana praised the administration’s investment in Bungoma and the Western region, emphasizing the appointment of leaders from the region to senior government positions. Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai and Public Service Principal Secretary Dr. Jane Imbunya echoed the call for professionals to support the government’s development agenda and contribute to equitable development across the country.
Tourism Principal Secretary Prof Julius Bitok highlighted the benefits derived from national government projects since President Ruto assumed office, urging professionals to support the President’s re-election bid to ensure the completion of ongoing development projects.
