Nakuru:Governor Susan Kihika has emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent political and ethnic tensions from escalating into violence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to Kenya News Agency, during the International Day of Peace celebrations at Nyayo Gardens, Governor Kihika called on peace actors and law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against individuals who exploit ethnic identities to create division. She urged the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to investigate and hold accountable politicians who use their communities to fuel discord.
Governor Kihika highlighted the importance of Nakuru County’s diversity as a strength rather than a tool for political division. She stressed the necessity of addressing signs of hatred and incitement early to prevent violence. Additionally, she linked sustainable peace with inclusive socio-economic development, citing county investments in healthcare, education, and economic opportunities as essential for building social cohesion.
NCIC Commissioner Joseph Nguyo echoed the call for early intervention, emphasizing the need for collaboration across government, political leaders, and civil society to maintain peace. He warned against reckless rhetoric by political leaders that could deepen ethnic divisions and stressed the importance of identifying early warning signs of conflict.
Nakuru was chosen to host the national celebrations due to its history of political and ethnic tensions, particularly during the 2007-2008 post-election violence. The Nakuru County Peace Accord established priorities such as conflict prevention and community confidence-building. Governor Kihika urged residents to focus on unity and reject divisive messages.
The event was themed ‘Investing in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,’ aligning with the International Day of Peace’s call for peacebuilding through inclusive governance and dialogue. Governor Kihika reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to working with security agencies and peace actors to ensure sustained peace and development.
