Government to Tarmac 1,656 Kilometers of Roads in Kiambu County

Thika:The government has announced plans to tarmac 1,656 kilometers of roads in Kiambu County, costing Sh152 billion, with the aim of enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth.

According to Kenya News Agency, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki revealed that 368 kilometers have already been completed at a cost of Sh20 billion. An additional 247 kilometers are currently under construction, with other projects in the design phase. Kindiki made these remarks in Thika on Monday during his inspection of the completed Gatuanyaga Fresh Produce Market and the launch of the 6.2-kilometer Kwaheri-Maria Magdalena Road project, valued at Sh395 million.

In Thika town, Sh1.6 billion has been allocated through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority to upgrade 27.7 kilometers of roads. Furthermore, 12.5 kilometers of link roads in Ngoingwa will be upgraded at a cost of Sh720 million. Kindiki also mentioned that a contractor would be on site within a week for the Juja-Ndarugo-Thika-Kimuchu Primary School Road, with improvements planned for roads in Makongeni Estate.

The government is also designing a proposed Thika-Nairobi expressway under a public-private partnership to alleviate congestion along the busy corridor. Kindiki stated that once completed, travelers will have the option to use the expressway or the existing route, reducing traffic on the superhighway.

Addressing the stalled Gatuanyaga-Munyu-Komo road project, Kindiki assured that the government would resolve delays and ensure its completion.

Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a highlighted the potential benefits of the infrastructure projects, noting that improved roads would enhance livelihoods and unlock economic opportunities in Thika. She emphasized that the upgrades would prepare Thika to become a smart city and mentioned the town’s readiness to host upcoming events such as the Jamhuri Day celebrations and next year’s African Cup of Nations.
