Uasin gishu: The Government Delivery Unit (GDU) team toured Uasin Gishu County to inspect flagship government projects, including the Eldoret Railway City Affordable Housing Project and the Kipchoge Keino Stadium. The visit was part of the GDU’s ongoing monitoring and evaluation exercise aimed at tracking the progress of key government priorities, programmes, and projects to ensure timely delivery.
According to Kenya News Agency, the GDU Regional Director in charge of Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and Kericho counties, Martin Rotich, commended the Eldoret Railway City project for being ahead of schedule after a meeting with the project management team led by Site agent Collins Marienga. Rotich noted that the project had reached 30 percent completion, exceeding the expected 28 percent progress as per the contractual terms.
Rotich reaffirmed the GDU’s commitment to providing practical interventions to overcome challenges encountered by government projects. He emphasized that verification visits help confirm the actual status of ongoing projects across regions and counties while also enhancing public awareness of the progress made under national government priorities.
The Eldoret Railway City Affordable Housing Project is an initiative by the Government of Kenya under the Affordable Housing Programme. It consists of 15 blocks of G+14 buildings, with a total of 2,180 housing units. These include 530 social housing units, 1,110 affordable housing units, and 540 market-rate units. The project also features 65 shops and other amenities such as garbage receptacles, a guard house, power house, basketball court, underground water tank, civil works (roads and sewer), a swimming pool, a police station, and a junior primary school.
The project, which began in March 2025, is scheduled for completion in March 2027. It currently provides employment to over 800 people, including local suppliers, contractors, sub-contractors, service providers, and technicians. ‘We embrace inclusivity and gender balance. Thirty percent of the workforce comprises women, and employees range from 18 to 65 years old. No major accidents have been reported thanks to the health and safety team,’ noted Marienga.
Uasin Gishu Housing Director, Edwin Chepsiror, lauded the progress of other affordable housing projects in the county, including the 220-unit Kidiwa Housing Project in Soy Sub-County, the 2,148-unit Pioneer Housing Project in Kapseret, and the 226-unit Kimumu AMS Project in Moiben. ‘Kidiwa is at 98 percent and ready for commissioning, with all units sold through the Boma Yangu portal. The Pioneer project stands at 61 percent completion, while Kimumu AMS is at 52 percent,’ said Chepsiror.
Uasin Gishu Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mathew Baroni, who represented County Commissioner Dr Eddyson Nyale, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to supporting government projects through adequate security and coordination by the multi-agency team. ‘The national government is fully committed to ensuring these projects are completed successfully and continue to deliver quality services to our citizens,’ he said.
