Kisumu: Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa has stressed the need to strengthen agricultural reforms that will help mitigate effects of climate change. Speaking at Maridadi Primary school in Kwanza Sub-County during a climate action and improved livelihood sensitization program, Dr. Barasa said climate change mitigation measures require an integrated multi-sectoral approach if tangible results were to be achieved.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Barasa highlighted the importance of preparing farmers and the public to engage in climate change mitigation efforts. She emphasized the progress made in the national tree planting campaign, noting that 1.9 billion trees have been planted across the country. Dr. Barasa encouraged Kenyans to continue this initiative, citing the planting of 90 million mangrove trees as a significant achievement.
During the event, the Cabinet Secretary donated 10 computers to Maridadi Primary School and provided assistive devices to pe
rsons with disabilities, including wheelchairs, to promote inclusivity. The program, themed ‘Building Climate Resilience, Restoring Nature, Empowering Communities,’ aimed to strengthen partnerships for climate action, sustainable livelihoods, and community development. It brought together stakeholders from various organizations, including the Kenya Sugar Board, Government Delivery Unit, and Agricultural Food Authority.
Leonidah Shiundu, a Commissioner at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), stated that SRC is collaborating with different ministries for similar programs nationwide. She emphasized the coordination with state agencies to promote government initiatives and deliver services to local communities.
