Migori: Deputy Governor (DG), Dr. Joseph Mahiri, has assured parents and students in Kuria East Sub-County that the government, in collaboration with the county administration, will continue to provide adequate security to ensure that the ongoing national examinations are conducted smoothly and peacefully.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Mahiri gave the assurance during a food distribution exercise at Wangirabose High School over the weekend. The school lies along the Kuria-Transmara border, an area prone to insecurity due to periodic cattle rustling and inter-community clashes between the Kuria and Kipsigis communities.
Dr. Mahiri stated that the government will ensure that all the schools along the Kuria-Transmara border sit their national examinations in peace to give these students a chance to compete fairly with others across the country. The Deputy Governor also distributed foodstuffs to six other schools located along the volatile border and encouraged the Form Four candidates to focus on their studies, assuring them that both the national and county governments were committed to providing a conducive environment for their examinations.
He noted that the food support was part of a broader initiative to cushion learners in areas affected by insecurity and poor harvests, ensuring that no student is disadvantaged during the exam period. Wangirabose High School Principal, Christopher Ooko, commended the government for its continued support, noting that insecurity had severely disrupted farming and food production in the region.
Ooko mentioned that in recent years, many community members have been unable to farm their land due to continuous fighting between the Kuria and Kipsigis communities. This has affected food production for both households and nearby schools. He added that the ongoing peace and support efforts were giving residents renewed hope for stability and improved livelihoods.
The assurance comes as thousands of candidates across Migori County continue to sit their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations under tight security.
