Government Allocates Sh700 Million for Gakoigo Stadium Upgrade

Nairobi: The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has announced the launch of the distributed renewable energy and clean cooking Project Preparation Facility

Murang’a: The government will invest Sh700 million to transform Gakoigo grounds in Maragua constituency into a modern 10,000-seater stadium. Speaking during a tour of the facility, Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi highlighted that the grounds, which have served the community since the pre-independence era, are due for an upgrade.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mwangi noted that Gakoigo has historically hosted numerous public events, but time and vandalism have left the grounds in need of renovation. The planned project, following a presidential directive, includes an eight-lane running track, a standard football pitch, modern changing rooms, and enhanced security features.

Mwangi stated that the upgraded stadium will be able to host both national and international games, placing Maragua on the sporting map. He emphasized that the investment aligns with the government’s broader strategy to revitalize the sports sector in the country by creating jobs, stimulating economic growth, and empowering communities.

Additionally, Mwangi mentioned plans to construct another modern stadium at Mumbi grounds within Murang’a town. During his visit, he also inspected the ongoing construction of the Mirira Sports Academy at Mbiri Ward in Kiharu Constituency, which is currently 30 percent complete. The academy is one of 37 being built across the country under Phase One at a cost of Sh1.7 billion.

The sports academy will include an athletics track, football pitch, and multiple courts for basketball, volleyball, and netball, along with a borehole and changing rooms. Mwangi expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting the creation of jobs for local youth and the potential for the academy to become a sporting excellence hub in Murang’a and beyond.

Mwangi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing both projects and ensuring that young talents receive the facilities they need to develop and monetize their skills. He underscored that these investments are not merely constructions but a strategic plan to secure the future for talented youth and communities.
