Nairobi:Murang’a County: The government is intensifying its efforts to expedite the completion of infrastructure projects nationwide by settling outstanding payments to contractors and ensuring sufficient funding for ongoing developments.
According to Kenya News Agency, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki announced that the government has so far paid Sh179 billion in outstanding bills for contractors working on road projects, with additional funds allocated for both ongoing and new projects.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the Gakoigo Stadium and Mbombo-Kwa Thamaki Road construction sites in Murang’a County, Kindiki emphasized the importance of timely payments to prevent project delays, allowing infrastructure investments to benefit Kenyans as planned. He noted that Sh1.2 billion had been allocated for the Mbombo-Kwa Thamaki Road, with a directive for its completion in under a year.
The Deputy President highlighted the Kenya Kwanza regime’s commitment to its five-year development plan, which includes roads, markets, sports facilities, affordable housing, and hostels, ensuring these projects are executed within the set timeframe.
He stressed the importance of local communities benefiting from these government projects, particularly through job opportunities for young people in the project areas, to prevent the importation of labor from distant regions. At the Gakoigo Stadium site, Kindiki encouraged young workers to embrace hard work and leverage their skills to improve their livelihoods and community development.
Kindiki also addressed the issue of alcohol and substance abuse among youth, promoting sports infrastructure as a means to nurture and monetize their talents. The government is constructing 32 stadiums across the country to expand sporting facilities and create talent development opportunities.
Gakoigo Stadium, with an estimated cost of Sh800 million, is designed to seat about 10,000 spectators and will feature a football pitch, tartan running track, changing rooms, washrooms, terraces, and parking facilities. The Deputy President urged adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
During his visit, Kindiki was accompanied by Maragua MP Mary Waithera, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, and other leaders.
