Fitness Initiative Uplifts Mombasa Youth

Mombasa: Hundreds of youths from Jomvu Sub-county braved the morning cold to participate in a fitness run dubbed ‘team discipline.’ The initiative, patronized by Mombasa businessman Abubakar Joho, aims to promote healthy living and inspire young people to shun drug abuse and other social vices associated with parts of the Coast region.

According to Kenya News Agency, the group’s Founder, Eng. Tolbert Musanju, representing the Patron, said the concept will expand and incorporate mentorship and networking that will see youth from across the County linked to job opportunities that merge with their specializations and education background. Musanju urged youth to join this noble course that will soon incorporate prize money tournaments, mentorship, networking, and an array of sport disciplines to keep young men and women productively busy.

Jomvu-based fitness coach, Edwin Ambani, noted that the construction of amenities such as well-equipped social halls at the Sub-County level will nurture budding talent that often goes unexploited. Ambani highlighted the lack of a good social hall in Miritini, which would cater to the needs of youth passionate about sports and healthy living, urging County leadership to consider bringing such amenities to the grassroots.

Jean Mutheu, a Jomvu Kuu resident, said that apart from keeping the youth in good shape, the initiative has been instrumental in identifying needy but talented and well-educated youth who have directly benefited from the program. Mutheu added that since the first edition in Mvita Sub-county, youth have received necessary facilitation through the patron, including assistance with acquiring basic legal documentation such as Identification Cards (IDs) and driver’s licenses. These efforts have helped youth seek employment, register as voters, and acquire passports, aiding them in becoming responsible citizens.
