Embu: Farmers from the semi-arid area of Makima Ward, Embu County, have a reason to smile after receiving Galla hybrid goats worth Sh2.3 million from the County Government. The 178 goats, including 162 does and 16 bucks, are expected to assist the farmers from the drought-stricken area in diversifying sources of income and enhancing food security.

According to Kenya News Agency, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of agriculture, John Nyaga, stated that the goats were well suited for the area due to their resilience to harsh climate conditions. These improved breeds are resistant to opportunistic diseases, mature fast, yield more milk, and have more meat compared to local breeds, thus providing quicker incomes to herders.

Speaking while overseeing the distribution at Makima Town on Friday, Nyaga emphasized the importance of training farmers on efficient management of the goats, including vaccination and deworming schedules, to ensure they bring maximum returns. He reported that since last year, the devolved unit has distributed 672 such goats to the tune of Sh14 million to farmers across the county.

Nyaga highlighted their aim to seize any opportunity beneficial to farmers, expressing hope that these goats will not only improve incomes but also enhance nutrition through milk. He urged farmers to refrain from selling the goats as they will be of more value in the future than the immediate gain from selling them.

Beneficiaries expressed optimism about the positive impact the goats will have on their financial situations. Farmer Elizabeth Mweni shared her excitement, stating, “I am happy today; I have received a hybrid goat, and I am sure in a few years’ time, I will own a herd.”
