Digital Learning Initiative Launched to Boost Children’s Creativity

Kilifi:Parents are being encouraged to embrace digital learning to foster creativity and equip children with skills for the evolving technological landscape.

According to Kenya News Agency, Fikirini Jacobs, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy, highlighted the benefits of digital platforms for accessing creative learning materials and enabling interaction among learners from different regions. Speaking at the launch of digital learning equipment under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP) at Kilifi Comprehensive School, Jacobs emphasized that interactive smartboards in junior secondary schools would enhance teaching and learning.

Jacobs explained that digital technology supplements teachers’ efforts by improving access to learning resources and facilitating collaborative lessons regardless of location. He stressed the importance of technology in enhancing teachers’ capabilities and urged parents to support its integration into classrooms.

Kevin Atibu, ICT Authority Deputy Director, stated that the initiative aims to complement teachers’ educational practices without replacing them. Digital skills are expected to enhance lesson delivery and student development. The project, now in its main installation phase, targets at least 20,000 schools by year’s end, with installations already completed in 10,323 schools.

The launch event featured a lesson delivered via an interactive smartboard, connecting learners from Kilifi and the broader Coast region. Kilifi Comprehensive School ICT teacher Gladys Kahonzi expressed optimism about the technology’s potential to simplify learning and bridge gaps caused by teacher shortages.

The Government is actively training teachers and equipping schools with smartboards, with over 64,000 teachers trained and more than 10,000 schools receiving the technology. Efforts are also underway to digitize content for junior secondary school learners, aiming to expand resource access and integrate technology into classroom teaching effectively.
