Digital Learning Devices Rolled Out in Machakos Junior Schools

Machakos:At least 375 public junior secondary schools in Machakos County have received digital learning devices as part of the second phase of the Kenyan government’s Digital Learning Programme. This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate technology into educational infrastructure across the nation.

According to Kenya News Agency, the programme is supported by the World Bank through the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Program and targets 10,382 public junior schools across all 47 counties in Kenya. ICT Authority representative Emmanuel Katana emphasized that this rollout highlights the government’s dedication to expanding digital learning.

Each of the targeted schools will be equipped with an interactive smartphone and a teacher’s laptop. All 375 schools in Machakos have already received these devices. Angeline Nzioki, headteacher of St Mary’s Girls JSS, stressed the importance of digital literacy in preparing students for a technology-driven world.

The programme aims to enhance digital literacy by providing curriculum-aligned digital resources, internet connectivity, and teacher training. More than 64,000 teachers have been trained to incorporate technology into their teaching methods, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students.

The launch event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission, the ICT Authority, as well as school boards, parents, and community stakeholders. These attendees underscored the need for responsible technology use and collaboration to ensure the initiative’s sustainability.
