Ruiru:Police have detained 12 individuals and confiscated hundreds of liters of illicit alcohol along with narcotic drugs in a targeted operation. This crackdown comes in response to increasing concerns over harmful brews that have been linked to deaths in parts of Kiambu County.
According to Kenya News Agency, the operation was spearheaded by Deputy County Commissioner Julius Too, resulting in the seizure of 211 liters of traditional muratina brew, various suspected counterfeit liquor brands, and 378 rolls of bhang. Authorities also closed down several unlicensed pubs suspected of selling these illegal products.
Deputy County Commissioner Too, accompanied by Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Charles Kibathi, stated that the operation aimed to tackle outlets involved in the distribution of illicit alcohol and narcotics. He urged residents to avoid consuming drinks from unverified sources and to report those manufacturing and selling these dangerous products.
The arrested suspects are expected to face charges in court. The seized alcoholic drinks and narcotics will be held as evidence. Commander Kibathi mentioned that no deaths had been reported in Ruiru Sub-County due to these harmful brews but emphasized the continuing enforcement efforts to eradicate illegal alcohol and drugs.
This operation follows increased concern in Kiambu after three individuals died in Kimende, Lari Sub-County, from suspected illicit alcohol consumption, with two others in critical condition.
