Eldoret: The technical committee for the World Safety Day 2026 is finalizing preparations for the global event, which will be celebrated at Central primary grounds in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Head of Field Operations at the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS) and Chairperson to the Technical Committee for WSD 2026, Ondimu Nyabwari, confirmed that the technical committee at the national level is already on the ground. They are conducting assessments for venues where upcoming DOSHS pre-event activities like live firefighting challenges, first-aid training, and medical camps will be held. Meetings with key stakeholders, including the county security team, are also underway.
Nyabwari highlighted that the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, often referred to as World Safety Day, is an annual international awareness campaign dedicated to promoting occupational safety and health (OSH) in workplaces around the world. It is observed globally on 28 April every year and serves as a focal point to spotlight the importance of safe, healthy, and decent working conditions for all workers.
He further emphasized the Directorate’s commitment to enforcing the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 2007, which aims to prevent accidents, injuries, and diseases at work. Nyabwari called for collaboration and teamwork between all stakeholders to ensure workplace safety. “In marking The World Safety Day, we commemorate workers who have lost their lives, suffered injuries, or developed illnesses due to unsafe workplaces,” he said.
The day is rooted in the principle that preventing workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and injuries not only protects human life but fosters sustainable economic growth, social justice, and dignity in work. Activities around the world emphasize tripartism, involving governments, employers, and workers in promoting safety best practices.
World Safety Day is an advocacy and awareness initiative championed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) – a United Nations agency responsible for setting international labour standards, promoting rights at work, and advancing decent employment opportunities globally.
Eric Guya, County DOSHS Coordinator, and Uasin Gishu DCC Reuben Ogeda, who chaired the organizing committee on behalf of the county commissioner at the county level, appreciated the collaboration between the DOSHS and all the stakeholders for the successful planning for the WDS 2026 event.
