Makueni: Makueni Deputy Governor (DG) Lucy Mulili has lauded bodaboda riders for their heroic action in saving the life of a pregnant woman and her newborn baby in a remote part of the county. The riders acted swiftly and came to the aid of the expectant mother, transporting her to Bangala Estate in Wote town, and ensured both her and the baby received timely medical care at Makueni County Referral Hospital.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mulili expressed her appreciation during an address at the World Contraception Day event held at Mother and Child Hospital. She commended the riders for their prompt response, stating, ‘I am deeply moved by your heroic act, for rushing the mother and her unborn baby to hospital where she received medical care.’

The incident highlights the impact of recent training provided to some bodaboda riders on maternal health by the Department of Health in collaboration with the Women Engaged in Development Organization. In recognition of their efforts, the deputy governor presented the mother with essential baby items including pampers, baby wipes, and a baby bag.

Mulili also addressed issues concerning fistula, urging women affected by the condition to seek medical assistance, assuring them of the availability of specialists ready to provide treatment. She encouraged women, saying, ‘Do not be ashamed. Visit the hospitals; there are specialists ready to help you access good treatment.’

On the subject of family planning, Mulili stressed the importance of contraceptive use to improve family well-being through proper child spacing. She announced ongoing efforts to expand the supply of contraceptives across all health facilities in the county to ensure they are accessible, affordable, and available to everyone.
