Nairobi: Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has urged young people who have attained the required age of 18 years to register as voters and participate in the country’s democratic processes. Barasa emphasized the significance of voter registration in enabling citizens to exercise their constitutional right to elect leaders and have a voice in decisions affecting their lives.
According to Kenya News Agency, the governor addressed this issue on Saturday at St John’s Mukhweya Secondary School in Kholera Ward, Matungu Sub-County, during a fundraiser for the completion of a girls’ dormitory. He encouraged eligible residents who had not yet registered as voters to do so and urged those without National Identity cards to acquire them in preparation for the forthcoming general elections.
Barasa highlighted the importance of active participation in civic affairs, stating that it is essential in strengthening democracy and ensuring citizens play their role in shaping the country’s future. In addition to voter registration, he announced collaborative plans with Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo to establish a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Matungu Sub-County. This initiative aims to provide local youth with opportunities to pursue health-related courses, thereby enhancing educational and professional prospects in the region.
The governor was joined by Nabulindo, area MCA Karim Osama Tingili, county officials led by Chief Officer for Livestock Production, Veterinary Services and Fisheries Oscar Odunga, as well as teachers, parents, and other education stakeholders at the event.
